Our Next Assignment—Hitting the Road

It started with a feeling. A quiet itch we couldn’t quite scratch. After years of serving around the world, from dusty bases in Iraq to NATO headquarters in Belgium, we thought we were ready for a quieter, more settled life. We’ve been out of the military for four years now, living the remote work dream and adjusting to a steady rhythm.

But over this past year, that habitual calling for a change of scenery has been too strong to ignore. As we were going through our calendars and wondering when we could carve out time to see more of the U.S., we realized we had nothing holding us in place any longer.

That familiar call to move, explore, and discover started tugging at us again, but this time, it wasn’t the military handing us orders. It was something internal. And this time, we get to write the mission ourselves.

So… we bought an RV.

No, we didn’t do it on a whim (one of us is a meticulous planner and the other is super spontaneous). We did the research, made the spreadsheets, stalked campground reviews, and took deep dives into all things battery-powered, water-tanked, and slide-out engineered.

The goal? To spend the next year adapting to RV life while we continue working full-time remotely—and then launch full-time on the road, visiting every U.S. National Park.

We’re calling it our Next Assignment. And instead of deployments or duty stations, our destinations will be places like Yellowstone, Zion, Shenandoah, and Denali.

This blog will document the ups, the downs, and the winding roads in between. We'll share what it's really like to work remotely from the road, how two Type-A Veterans (and two cats) handle ~250 square feet of living space, and what it takes to make a dream like this work.

If you’re a fellow Veteran, traveler, remote worker, family, friends —or just someone who’s ever felt the itch to roam—we hope you’ll come along for the ride.

Let’s find out what freedom really looks like.
