As we start venturing out and utilizing different Campgrounds, we wanted to list and rate them, mostly for our own memories but also for anyone in the area who is looking for a place to stay and stumbles upon our site for a quick recommendation! Every stop on the road has a story. Some campgrounds wow us with mountain views, others win us over with friendly neighbors or the perfect shady spot. And of course, a few will teach us what not to do when booking a site. We’ve decided to start sharing those stories here—quick, honest reviews of the campgrounds we visit. Nothing fancy, just the things we’d tell a friend: how easy it was to park, what the vibe was like, whether the showers worked, and if the price matched the experience.

Vandenberg Space Force Base FamCamp

Overall: As a pretty recent retiree, life on a military installation is nostalgic: morning Reveille, evening Retreat, and access to the Exchange and Commissary. We appreciate the benefits that come with military retirement, especially when they include a full-hookup RV site for $35 a night. Watching 2 rockets launch from your campground in one week is a pretty impressive amenity, too! The pull-through sites were decent, with old asphalt (not level) and some grass. The back-in sites are literally in two parking lots - actual old parking lots. There is a mix of people who are here for a day or two, and those who have literally lived in this park for years. So some of the sites are a bit unappealing - like loads of bins, planters, a greenhouse, propane fire pits, bikes, pet fences, yard stuff, etc. But for this price - who cares!? The park is also full of deer, and we've spotted a coyote and a fox near the rubbish bins. Great spot for Space enthusiasts or anyone looking to venture throughout the Central Coast!

Sun Outdoors Central Coast Wine Country

Overall: After a rough time at Pinnacles, we were ready for a little more “glamping” with nicer facilities and amenities. Sun Outdoors has 2 campgrounds in the Paso Robles area, and this was the smaller of the 2. Big beautiful clubhouse, pool, wine bar, clean bathrooms and laundry, and sites with nice concrete pads and grass. Overall, the campground itself was very nice and clean. The downside: the local management. We happened to book our quick trip during a weekend where a large family/friend group rented most of the sites and we were smack in the middle. The families basically turned the park into their own mini Daytona Beach complete with small kids riding motorized scooters and power wheels at all hours and right down the Main Street in front of our rig. When we brought it up to management as the constant noise was really bothering the cats (and its forbidden per their own campground rules), the manager told Juanita “you’re free to leave whenever you want…” rather than enforcing their own regulations. Clearly the larger groups money was worth more than ours and nothing was done. So other than horrible staff, a very nice park that could use new personnel and better customer service.

Pinnacles Campground

Overall: We booked a full week here, but after experiencing the conditions firsthand, we decided we’d had enough and packed up early. That’s not something we do lightly, but this campground gave us plenty of reasons to leave. Its proximity inside the national park is really its only selling point, and with virtually nothing else nearby, you’re largely dependent on whatever the campground provides. Unfortunately, that isn’t much. We stayed in Site 101, a barren, dusty patch of ground with absolutely no grass, no shade, and nowhere to escape the sun. Our visit coincided with a heatwave, making the scorching temperatures and relentless dust particularly miserable. You might think a campground in this climate would have a functioning swimming pool, but think again. The pool was closed and, judging by its appearance, looked like it hadn’t welcomed a swimmer in years. But the real disaster was the shower situation. For the entire campground, there were just TWO designated women’s showers. Two! Predictably, there were lines, and the facilities themselves were filthy. As an alternative, three all-gender portable shower units sat nearby. Imagine a porta-potty with a showerhead, and you’re getting close. The stench was nauseating, the drains were clogged, and wastewater pooled around your feet. Nothing quite completes a day of hiking like standing in someone else’s questionable shower water. And here’s the kicker: our campsite had neither water nor sewer hookups, making access to clean, functional showers more than a luxury. It was a necessity. As if that weren’t enough, electricity to the entire campground was shut off for a full day without any advance warning. And because generators are strictly prohibited, there was no backup option. For RV travelers relying on shore power to keep their rigs comfortable, that’s a pretty significant failure in communication and planning. To be fair, not everything was terrible. The on-site camp store was surprisingly well-stocked, which was especially appreciated given the lack of nearby services. The wildlife was another highlight, with deer, wild turkeys, raccoons, quail, rabbits, and countless birds wandering freely throughout the grounds, seemingly unbothered by campers. We genuinely enjoyed watching them, and they provided some of the few memorable moments of our stay. Ultimately, this campground benefits enormously from its proximity to the national park, and it seems to rely heavily on that advantage. But a convenient location shouldn’t excuse neglected amenities, inadequate sanitation, or poor communication. We don’t expect luxury when camping. We’re perfectly comfortable with rustic surroundings, basic facilities, and the occasional inconvenience. That’s part of RV travel. But there’s a difference between rustic and poorly maintained, and this campground crossed that line. If you’re completely self-contained, have ample onboard water, and can tolerate dust, heat, and potentially unreliable utilities, it might serve as a convenient base for exploring the park. Just don’t arrive expecting much beyond a place to park.

Travis Air Force Base FamCamp

Overall: It’s hard to beat staying on a military installation, especially an active duty base with all of the amenities. The Travis AFB FamCamp is located right inside the Main Gate and is walking distance from the Exchange, Commissary, Gym, and a Burger King. Right next to the campsites is the base carwash which has a bay for large trucks and campers, so its super easy to give the rig a wash either on your way in or way out. The facilities inside the campground offer a laundry room with 3 washers and 3 dryers, all phone app enabled, and large men’s/women’s bathrooms with 3 showers in each, all very clean. While the camp spots are mostly gravel, each has a concrete pad with a picnic table and ample room for a vehicle and any other outdoor extras. No major issues here outside of the traffic noise from the main gate, and the occasional roar of a C-17 Globemaster taking off (which is pretty cool to watch). Anyone who has ever served knows the ins and outs of base living and all that comes with, but there’s a certain “coming home” feeling while being back on base and walking amongst today’s brothers/sisters in arms. And oh yeah, California Wine Country is 30 minutes down the road… If you’re into wine by chance. ;)

Boulder Creek RV Resort

Overall: Located on the north-end of town, only 30 seconds off the I-5, is a quaint but fully stocked RV resort called Boulder Creek. The park is spacious and offers several different spot types depending on how much room you need. Around the resort are 2 dog parks, a dog wash, a multi-purpose building with entertaining space/kitchen, gym, laundry, and 3 private bathrooms. There is another bathroom building in the center with private mens/womens sides and each has individual locking toilet rooms and shower rooms. Up front is the welcome center which hosts a mail room, another shower room, country store, and a swimming pool/playground next door. The bathrooms are meticulously cleaned daily and the laundry rooms were clean as well with nice machines and space for folding. Lots of grassy areas and ample space between sites. The pads are all cement and there are lots of trees offering shade in a particularly hot part of California! The grounds are well kept and the staff here are incredibly nice and helpful! A perfect spot to make camp if Redding or Lassen Volcanic National Park is your destination!

Klamath River RV Park

Overall: Fun spot right on the Klamath River and smack in the middle of Redwood State/National Parks. Good size spots on grass with full hookups unless you’re riverside, then there is no sewer due to seasonal flooding. The bathrooms are older but cleaned daily and the showers are hot and spacious. Laundry room is quarters fed and fairly new machines. Nothing major to write home about here, as this park has been here for decades but its well maintained and gives incredible location for anyone interested in fishing or hiking the parks nearby. Definitely nothing around as far as stores or food, so make sure to stop in Crescent City if coming from the North, or Eureka if coming from the south!

Bay Point Landing

Overall: What an amazing spot off the beaten path of Highway 101. This resort truly is “Luxury” as the signage suggests and well worth the price if you’re in the area. With the hotel-esque check-in, clubhouse galley and entertainment room, heated pool and gym, this place feels more like a Hilton than a campground. The bathrooms are very clean, spacious, and there are 4 separate shower rooms as well. The laundry machines are modern and use credit card/Apple Pay. There is a dog wash outside complete with products for the peppers and a playground/bocce ball court in the middle of the camp. Each spot has a lit sign (which also lights the power hookups) and a paver patio with picnic table and large stone fire pit. There are plenty of waterside spots, but there is no bad spot throughout the camp, and on the other side of the main building are cabins for rent which add a bit more luxury if needed. Cape Arago State Park is only 10 minutes away and there is plenty of shopping nearby if needed. Biggest surprise? The front desk will DELIVER items to your campsite from their store, for FREE. You pay for the items but they will bring them over up to 10pm! This was a much needed reprieve after staying at some places that felt old and dirty.

Hart’s Camp

Overall: The location is hard to beat. A 30 second walk outside of the park grounds has you on the beach at Cape Kiwanda overlooking Chief Kiwanda rock (think Haystack rock in Cannon Beach), and the tiny town surrounding the resort has food, drinks, a wine bar, country markets, and everything else you need for a comfy stay. With that said, the campground itself is pretty antiquated and showing its age. The RV spots are gravel with older hookup boxes and lots of sticker plants nearby (don’t walk around barefoot). The bathrooms are pretty dirty and even with daily cleaning, the shower curtains are full of mildew and mold. There’s a laundry room with ample machines, $2.00/wash and $1.50/dryer, but the machines are small so you may need multiple loads depending on your family size. Again, the location is amazing, so if you’re here for the beach, surfing, dog friendly and quaint, this place is for you.

Pacific Beach RV Park (Navy MWR)

Satellite/Cell Coverage: Spotty. Great satellite coverage but cell service is almost non-existent in RV park and on beach. Site wi-fi is available to guests but isn’t the greatest and shouldn’t be relied on for those needing fast/reliable internet.

Overall: An amazing hidden gem on the Olympic coast, this Navy MWR property is just above the Pacific Beach state park but is exclusive to military members. Guests start at the registration building off the main road which hosts the front desk, a gift shop, and bar/restaurant. There are also some items available for check out, such as beach gear and camping equipment. There are 30 cottages on the south side of the property, and tent camping directly behind the registration building. The RV park is located on the north side up against the bluff overlooking the ocean and allows for 43 spots, 40-60 feet. Within the RV park there is a covered pavilion for gatherings and a fish cleaning station for avid fishermen. The bathrooms/showers are very clean and serviced daily, and on the other side of the same building is a laundry room with 2 washers and 2 dryers, all free! Lots of green space for activities and a small park is located between the tent camping and RV park section. A whale watching tower is also on property and lots of fire pits for communal use. We were very happy with our spot and the cool sea air we woke up to each day. It was quite breezy all week, but that’s just the region.

Flowing Lake Park & Campground

Overall: Site #9 easily accommodated our 30-foot Class A with room to park our SUV, backing up to peaceful woods filled with mossy trees, ferns, and a gentle stream that added a calming soundtrack. The site’s location directly across from the restrooms and showers was convenient, with clean, well-stocked facilities—though unheated, making for a brisk experience on colder mornings. The campground itself features spacious, level gravel sites with picnic tables and fire rings, offering impressive privacy with over 100 feet between neighbors. A paved 0.8-mile loop provides an easy walk through the park, leading to Flowing Lake, where you’ll find a dock, boat launch, picnic areas, and a swim spot. Surrounded by dense forest and natural quiet—broken only by frogs at night and birds in the morning—the overall atmosphere is calm, secluded, and deeply restful.

Cap Sante Marina and RV Park

Overall: Gorgeous location right alongside the Port of Anacortes Marina and near Rotary Park. The Anacortes Farmer’s Market is about 100 yards from the site and downtown is a 3 minute walk. The RV park is only a few years old and still looks brand new, with super clean bathroom/shower/laundry facilities. The hookups are all clean and close to the pad, with a picnic table and plenty of space for a vehicle in most stalls. An absolute must for urban campers who want water, woods, and city access all in one!

Kayak Point County Park

Overall: Beautiful location but dated facilities on site. Campsites are all dirt, very uneven, and skinny one way road/driveways so larger rigs will have trouble on some sites. Proximity to the water is great and the County park is wonderful for families and children. Hookups were good although there was no sewer. Sites closer to the main road can definitely hear traffic throughout the day but its not too bad.

Cliffside RV Park

Overall: Fun campground outside of Seattle. Gated, with 180 sites and lots of trees for great shade in the summer. Dated but clean bathrooms and quiet around the campsites. Water spigot was missing valve, so had to use pliers to turn on, and power was 30 amps with low voltage warning on surge protector. Otherwise, great stay and beautiful location!
